A student enters the centre and gets seated.

She takes out her books.

“What will you be studying today?”

She decides to do her Maths homework and prep for her History.

“How many questions do you intend to attempt?”

“What will be the timing that you will set for completing the sums?”

She determines the timing and before she embarked on doing her homework, she remembers the routine we have taught her.

Whenever she finds a question difficult, she tags the questions and moves on.

When she is done, she attempts to seek out the gaps in her understanding of the topic. As she struggles, we give her time to sort it out on her own.

We give a hint that she could try asking the other student in the room. After some prompting, she made the effort to do so.

After she has gained a better understanding, we checked on her.

“Where did your confusion start? How did you resolve that?”

Then we run through the process of learning again, showing how she could seek peer learning when she struggles with understanding.

As she made the second attempt at the questions, we take note of the time that she has taken and how she is engaging her work.

We noted some strain.

“When you are done, do the checkout and take a break. How long have you been at it? Take note of it. You need to rest after a stretch of at most 45 minutes. We’ll do this again and we’ll streamline your process.”

After the break, she decided to move on to History and read another Chapter ahead of her class.

As she proceed with her Optimised Reading, we noticed that her Note-Taking has improved. She has also increased her capacity to recall during the Closed Book Recall phase.

“Would you like to push the Active Reading to 12 minutes?”

By the end of the session, she had completed her reading and notes for another chapter of History.

The above captures much of our work for the first two to three months of the Learning Facilitation Programme.

During this initial stage, our focus is towards pushing students to be ahead of their classes with preparatory reading on their own.

Through learning facilitation, we help develop students into self-directed learners.

We will subsequently move on to complete the JumpStart set before embarking on the StudySMART set of the 22 Essential Study Skills.
